2019 CDP Plenary: Future of development policy in a changing multilateral context

“Can multilateralism survive?” is the theme of an open session organized by the Committee for Development Policy (CDP). The event, taking place during the 21st session of the CDP Plenary from 11-15 March 2019 features four CDP members, Winnie Byanyima, Ha-Joon Chang, Kevin Gallagher and Mariana Mazzucato, who will present their thoughts on the future of development policy in a changing multilateral context. A discussion will follow the presentations by the speakers.

About the panelists:


Winnie Byanyima
Executive Director of Oxfam International, is a global women’s rights leader, human rights defender and a global authority on economic inequality. A former Ugandan member of parliament, she was recently appointed to the Global Commission on the Future of Work established by the International Labour Organization. She currently serves as Chair of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Africa Regional Strategy Group.

Ha-Joon Chang
Director, Centre of Development Studies, University of Cambridge, England, and is well-known as the author of 15 books including Economics: The User’s Guide; Bad Samaritans; and Kicking Away the Ladder – Development Strategy in Historical Perspective.

Kevin Gallagher
Director of the Global Development Policy Center at Boston University, has written or co-authored six books including The Clash of Globalizations: Essays on Trade and Development Policy; and Ruling Capital: Emerging Markets and the Reregulation of Cross-Border Finance. Gallagher co-chairs the T-20 Task Force on International Financial Architecture at the G-20.

Mariana Mazzucato
Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL) and has advised governments around the world on innovation-led growth. Her most recent books are The Value of Everything: Making and Taking in the Global Economy, and The Entrepreneurial State, which focused on the need to develop new frameworks to understand the role of the state in economic growth, and was on the Financial Times Books of the Year list 2013.
