Our Divisions: Statistics Division

The Division compiles and disseminates global statistical information, develops standards and norms for statistical activities, and supports countries’ efforts to strengthen their national statistical systems. It facilitates the coordination of international statistical activities and supports the functioning of the United Nations Statistical Commission as the apex entity of the global statistical system. At the request of Member States, the Division assists them to improve their statistical services by giving advice and training; it also promotes modern surveying and mapping techniques as a tool for growth and development.

Regional Training Workshop on Trade SDMX to raise awareness on SDMX-IMTS artifacts

African Union Commission (AUC) and UN Statistics Division (UNSD) organize jointly the first Regional Training Workshop on Trade SDMX to raise awareness on SDMX-IMTS artifacts including data structure, concepts and code lists; and to train IT experts and trade statisticians in using latest SDMX tools to map their trade database in to SDMX-IMTS output. UN DESA in cooperation with the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO-EMRO) is organizing a Workshop on the Operation of Civil Registration, Vital Statistics and Identity Management Systems and the Production of Vital Statistics Reports for the Eastern Mediterranean Region Countries. The workshop will take place in Casablanca, Morocco, from 19 to 23 March 2018.

The First International Forum on Migration Statistics

In close collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) organized the first inaugural International Forum on Migration Statistics at OECD Conference Hall in Paris, France from 15 to 16 January 2018. Attended by over 500 experts from a crosscutting range of disciplines, the Forum offered a unique opportunity for both data producers and users to effectively interact and dynamically discuss how to improve existing data collection and dissemination methods.

UN DESA Supports Member States in Developing and Strengthening Environment Statistics and Integrated Environmental-Economic Accounting

Integrated information and high-quality statistics are not only essential elements in the promulgation of evidence-based policy and decision making, they are also key to monitoring the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Given the critical role of high-quality environmental and integrated socio-economic statistics, the United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs implemented a project titled “Supporting Member States in Developing and Strengthening Environment Statistics and Integrated Environmental-Economic Accounting for the Improved Monitoring of Sustainable Development.” 

Online training course on Green Economy Indicators

The Industrial and Energy Statistics Section of UNDESAs Statistics Division organized an online training course on green economy indicators from 7 to 30 June 2017. The course was conducted in 10 separate modules highlighting different aspects of the indicators,...
