The primary responsibility of the Course Development Unit (CDUs) is to produce and to deliver high quality training courses tailored to the needs of its countries/regions. These courses are based on an extensive training needs analysis and an assessment of manpower requirements. Training courses are task-oriented with practical applications and are focused on solutions of priority problems in the field of coastal or ocean management.

Course Development Units also import courses from other CDUs and adapt them to their local/regional needs.  When working at the regional level, or within countries having very extensive territory, the training courses become itinerant and they may be delivered in different coastal regions with minimum adaptation to local conditions.

In line with global environmental priorities, all courses include appropriate elements on marine biodiversity (e.g. Jakarta Mandate) as well as on the interdependence between freshwater and coastal/ocean areas as a resource system and a management unit.

WHO WORKS IN A COURSE DEVELOPMENT UNIT (CDU)?

Each CDU is composed of a team of Course Developers who are pedagogic experts in charge of the development of the training courses. They are trained by the UN/DOALOS Central Support Unit in the TRAIN-SEA-COAST (TSC) pedagogic methodology.

In addition, specialized Subject Matter Experts join the Team on an ad hoc basis, to provide technical input to course development. Computer experts may also join the team on an ad hoc basis to advise on information technology or computer-based training (CBT). The Manager of the Course Development Unit oversees all the activities of the Unit.

Some TSC CDUs also train a cadre of TSC instructors.
