On 14 December
2012, the People's Republic of China submitted to the Commission on the Limits
of the Continental Shelf, in accordance with Article 76, paragraph 8, of the
Convention, information on the limits of the continental shelf beyond 200
nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of its territorial sea
is measured in part of the East China Sea.
It is noted that
the Convention entered into force for China on 7 July 1996.
The note verbale
accompanying the submission states that “[t]he submission is a partial
submission concerning the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200
nautical miles in part of the East China Sea. This submission of the Chinese
Government is without prejudice to any future submission by China on delineation
of the outer limits of the continental shelf in [the] East China Sea and other
seas".
In accordance with the
Rules of Procedure of the Commission, a communication is being circulated to all
Member States of the United Nations, as well as States Parties to the
Convention, in order to make public the executive summary of the Submission,
including all charts and coordinates contained in that summary.
The consideration
of the Submission made by China will be included in the provisional agenda of
the thirty-second session of the Commission to be held in New York from 15 July
to 30 August 2013.
Upon completion
of the consideration of the Submission, the Commission will issue
recommendations pursuant to Article 76 of the Convention.
