The United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Compact Coordination Committee holds its 7th Meeting

星期二, 14 December 2021 - 10:00am

The United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact (Counter-Terrorism Compact) held its 7th Compact Coordination Committee (Coordination Committee) meeting chaired by Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, on 14 December 2021. It brought together 117 representatives from 26 Counter-Terrorism Compact entities.

The discussion built on the outcomes of the 6th meeting of the Coordination Committee, during which Counter-Terrorism Compact entities reflected on the implications of the developments in Afghanistan for United Nations counter-terrorism efforts in Central Asia and Africa.

Secretary-General António Guterres, in a written statement that was delivered by Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov, highlighted that the global terror threat is now more diverse, spreading offline and online amidst growing mistrust, polarization, weak governance, organized crime, and conflict. He called on Counter-Terrorism Compact entities to further strengthen partnerships to tackle this threat and deliver technical assistance rooted in human rights and the rule of law.

Under-Secretary-General Voronkov highlighted that 2021 was defined by great progress in United Nations counter-terrorism efforts and cooperation, coupled with unprecedented challenges in the international terrorism landscape. He underscored the crucial importance of supporting Member States to address these challenges, through a strong and sustained multilateral understanding, analysis, and cooperation.

The meeting served as an opportunity for Heads of Counter-Terrorism Compact entities to define priorities for a stronger multilateral collaboration. The event also featured a presentation on the United Nations Countering Terrorist Travel Programme by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and the adoption of practical options to enhance regional coordination through the Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact.

Launched in December 2018, as part of the United Nations Secretary-General’s reform of the United Nations counter-terrorism architecture, the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact is the largest coordination framework within the United Nations, leveraging the expertise of 43 United Nations and non-United Nations entities to support UN Member States’ counter-terrorism efforts.
