Ninth United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact Committee Meeting

The Ninth Coordination Committee meeting of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact (Counter-Terrorism Compact) is taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 25-26 January 2023 in a hybrid (in-person/virtual) format.

The two-day meeting will provide an important opportunity to discuss ongoing and emerging challenges in preventing and countering terrorism, with a particular focus on "The Changing Counter-Terrorism Landscape and Evidence-Based/Data-Centric Responses to the Threat".

The first day of the meeting included a high-level opening session with introductory remarks by Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and  Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Compact Coordination Committee and a keynote address by the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres.

The opening segment was followed by a strategic discussion chaired by Under-Secretary-General Voronkov on how to advance global “data action” and achieve better results in countering terrorism, in line with the Secretary-General’s Data Strategy and under the New Agenda for Peace. Participants will include  Heads of Counter-Terrorism Compact entities, the co-facilitators of the eighth biennial review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, and senior representatives from regional organizations, civil society and the private sector.

The second day of the meeting will be moderated by Mr. Rafi Shah, Chief of Policy, Knowledge Management and Coordination Branch of UNOCT and feature a presentation from the private sector on global security challenges, threats and trends in the cyber environment and the responsible use of data. The opening session is followed by progress updates and thematic priorities of  Counter-Terrorism Compact entities and Chairs of Counter-Terrorism Compact working groups.

Launched by the United Nations Secretary-General in 2018, the Counter-Terrorism Compact is the largest coordination framework within the United Nations system, with 45 UN and non-UN entities as members or observers.
