UN chief calls for inclusive civilian-led transition in Burkina Faso

The UN Secretary-General has called for an inclusive, civilian-led transition leading to full constitutional order in Burkina Faso, his spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Ban Ki-moon has been following the situation in the West African country since long-serving President Blaise Campaoré resigned last Friday and fled the country in the face of popular uprisings.

The people in Burkina Faso protested against an attempt to amend the constitution to allow the former President who had been in power for 27 years to stand for elections next year.

Protests continued in the capital, Ouagadougou after the military seized power in the country.

A joint mission of the United Nations, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States has been holding consultations with regional leaders to help resolve the political crisis.
