Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS)
Outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines:
Submissions to the Commission
: Submission by the Republic of Iceland

Updated on 13 April 2016

On 29 April 2009, the Republic of Iceland submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, in accordance with Article 76, paragraph 8, of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, information on the limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured in the Ægir Basin area and in the western and southern parts of Reykjanes Ridge.

It is noted that the Convention entered into force for Iceland on 16 November 1994.

According to the submitting State, this is a partial submission, which "does not cover the continental shelf of Iceland in the Hatton-Rockall area, which is subject to overlapping claims by other States, or in the eastern part of Reykjanes Ridge which potentially overlaps the Hatton-Rockall area. In order not to prejudice questions relating to the delimitation of boundaries between States in the Hatton-Rockall area, a submission for both of these areas will be made at a later stage."

In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Commission, a communication was circulated to all Member States of the United Nations, as well as States Parties to the Convention, in order to make public the executive summary of the partial submission, including all charts and coordinates contained in that summary.

The consideration of the partial submission made by Iceland was included in the agenda of the twenty-fourth session of the Commission held in New York from 10 August to 11 September 2009.

Upon completion of the consideration of the submission, the Commission made recommendations pursuant to Article 76 of the Convention.

Summary of the Recommendations (2016)

Pursuant to section V. paragraph 11 (3) of Annex III to the Rules of Procedures of the Commission, the summary of the Recommendations is hereby made public.
