On 16 June 2008, the Republic of Indonesia submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, in accordance with Article 76, paragraph 8, of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, information on the limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured relating to the continental shelf of North West of Sumatra Island.

It is noted that the Convention entered into force for Indonesia on 16 November 1994.

According to the submitting State, its Government will be preparing a number of other partial submissions to the Commission.

In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Commission, a communication is being circulated to all Member States of the United Nations, as well as States Parties to the Convention, in order to make public the executive summary of the partial submission, including all charts and coordinates contained in that summary.

The consideration of the submission made by Indonesia will be included in the provisional agenda of the twenty-third session of the Commission to be held in New York in March-April 2009.

On 28 March 2011 the Commission adopted the “Recommendations of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in regard to the submission made by Indonesia in respect of the area North West of Sumatra on 16 June 2008”. Pursuant to article 6, paragraph 3, of annex II to the Convention, the recommendations, including a summary thereof, were submitted in writing to the coastal States and to the Secretary-General.
