Twelve Asia-Pacific youth passionate about journalism and its potential to give voice to the marginalized gathered in Bangkok late last year to report on the “Youth at the Heart of the 2030 Agenda: The Case For Space” Regional Roundtable.
Current and aspiring reporters joined the Youth Newsroom to report on the roundtable, which was organized by UNESCO, UNDP Restless Development and partners in early December.
The newsroom simulation put the young people themselves in the editors’ seats, deciding on which of the many issues being covered at the forum mattered most to them, and planning their daily reporting accordingly.
Journalism and communications professionals worked with the young reporters, giving them an opportunity to hone their skills and learn from industry veterans in a dynamic, multicultural newsroom setting.
The results are below: thought-provoking, insightful reports on topics ranging from shrinking civic spaces in the region to online hate speech and other challenges of the digital age.
(In the video above, Misako Ito, Communication and Information Chief from UNESCO Bangkok, describes the aims of the newsroom, while participants share how the experience will impact their journalism careers.)
