The Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth welcomes the announced collaboration today from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU’s Foreign & Security Policy Service, to work with the United Nations and the Anna Lindh Foundation, to co-organize a Youth, Peace and Security consultation for young people from Europe for the 2250 Progress Study called for in the historic UN Security Council Resolution 2250.

Scheduled for September 2017, the European consultation represents the culminating event in a worldwide consultation process on the central role of youth in peace building, with the outcomes to be presented to the UN Security Council in January 2018.

The announcement was made as the EU´s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini also launched a pioneering “Young Med Voices Plus” initiative to further engage dialogue with young Mediterranean voices.

 Background on UN Security Council Resolution 2250:

On December 9, 2015, the UN Security Council, unanimously adopted resolution 2250 which urged Member States to increase representation of young women and men in decision-making at the local, national, regional and international levels.

Resolution 2250 (2015), sponsored by Jordan, represents an unprecedented acknowledgment of the urgent need to engage young peacebuilders in promoting peace and countering extremism. The resolution also positions youth and youth-led organizations as important partners in the global efforts to counter violent extremism and promote lasting peace.

The resolution boosts youth-led peacebuilding and conflict-prevention interventions to build peaceful communities and underpin democratic, inclusive governance.
