Celebrate International Youth Day 2014 with the theme #MentalHealthMatters at the UN Headquarters on 12 August from 10:00 AM-1:00PM!

Acknowledging the theme of this year’s International Youth Day and following the UN #MentalHealthMatters campaign, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Focal Point on Youth (DESA), and the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth (OSGEY) seek to bring attention to the issue of youth with mental health conditions, specifically aiming to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and the treatment of its conditions. Youth with mental health conditions are often subject to stigma and discrimination, largely due to an overall lack of awareness and understanding of mental health conditions. The stigma surrounding mental health issues can lead to exclusion and/or discourage people from seeking help for fear of being negatively ‘labelled.’
This event will raise awareness on this important topic, as well as highlight the experiences of brave, young individuals who have chosen to speak out about these issues with the objective of overcoming stigma and discrimination to ensure that young people with mental health conditions can lead full and healthy lives free from isolation and unnecessary shame, and openly seek the services and support they need.
