More than any other illness, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), is a disease defined by belief. Some believe that only gays and injecting drug users are at risk, others believe that intercourse with a virgin provides a guaranteed cure, while there are those who believe it’s better not to know their HIV status. Many different people believe many different things about this deadly virus. Too few know the facts.
A Global Leaders Forum against HIV and TB was held at UN Headquarters in New York on 9 June 2008. The organizers drew attention to the urgent need for collaboration to reduce the number of people living with HIV, but dying of TB.
