It is an important day for Gbanyobiya Guinayene, Damigou Bkolani and Lalli Ckangbeni, partners in a small market restaurant in the village of Dapaong, Togo. They are making the last payment to their loan officer, Solele Nambique, the woman in white.

Solele, who works for Timpac, a local microfinance institution (MFI), arranged for a loan equivalent to $50 so that the three partners could expand their business. The result: these hardworking women were able to increase their incomes and provide for their families. And they paid back the loan within five months.

The UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) identifies promising MFIs like Timpac and works to strengthen their operations and extend their outreach through training and the provision of lending capital. The highest priority is helping the MFIs reach operational sustainability, so that they will not be dependant on outside sources of continued funding. The result is that more undercapitalized and poor entrepreneurs — many of them women — get access to credit for their business ideas so they can lift themselves out of poverty.
