WOMENWATCH
WomenWatch
is a United Nations interagency website on gender equality and empowerment of women.
It was created in 1997 to support follow-up to the United Nations
Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing 1995). It was founded
by the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the United
Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the International
Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women
(INSTRAW). The management of the website is currently undertaken
by a Committee composed of the Gender Focal Points in DPI, FAO,
ILO, ITU, the Regional Commissions, UNDP, UNFPA, UNIFEM,
and DAW (task manager).
WomenWatch
has developed directory of resources and information
on work carried out to promote gender equality
across the entire UN system. Through WomenWatch information
is disseminated on intergovernmental processes, research
and statistics and operational activities within the United
Nations system. The website was showcased at
the World Summit on the Information Society Tunis in 2005
as an example of successful inter-agency collaboration and
networking within the United Nations.
The current focus of the Management Committee
regarding partnerships is on consolidating
the involvement of all members of the Inter-Agency Network on
Women and Gender Equality in the management and maintenance
of WomenWatch. In the long term there will be an increased focus
on contacts and partnerships with other organizations and networks
outside the United Nations, in particular national machineries
for the advancement of women.
