SENIOR MISSION LEADERS COURSE

Jordan | 31 October - 11 November
Host/Sponsor: Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO)

As part of the commemoration of 1325, DPKO will be holding a senior mission leaders course in Jordan. For the first time, the course, aimed at training senior management in DPKO missions, will have 50% women, civilian, police and military participating.




A WEEK ON WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP IN PEACE & SECURITY IN COLOMBIA/
SEMANA POR EL LIDERAZGO DE LAS MUJERES, LA PAZ Y LA SEGURIDAD EN COLOMBIA

Bogotà, Colombia | 8-12 November
Host/Sponsor: UNIFEM (part of UN Women)

The conference explores the importance of women’s political representation in strengthening democracy; measures to protect women and girls in courts and transitional justice; ways to strengthen participation of women in peacebuilding; and mechanisms to implement the Security Council resolutions on women, peace and security.

WOMEN-ONLY INTER-INSTITUTIONAL COURSE ON COMBATING ILLICIT FIREARMS TRAFFICKING

Lima, Perú | 22 November - 3 December
Host/Sponsor: UN Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-LiREC) / Office of Disarmament Affairs (ODA)

This course is designed to build Latin American and Caribbean States’ capacities to implement the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects. The second edition of the course (revamped in 2009) integrates the International Instrument to Enable States to Identify and Trace in a Timely and Reliable Manner, Illicit Small Arms and Light Weapons as well as new material on armed violence, human security, gender, youth, use of force and practical disarmament measures.

The IITC is a ten-day training course (7.5 days classroom instruction and 2.5 days practical field exercise) directed towards mid-level law enforcement officials including police, armed forces, intelligence, customs, prosecutors and judges.

This course is the first women-only IITC. It is open to women law enforcement officials of Andean Community’s States (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru).

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION: WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A WOMAN IN GAZA TODAY

Gaza | 25 November - 10 December
Host/Sponsor: UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)

Beginning in October 2010, 30 women beneficiaries were trained to take photos and were provided with their own camera. Over a period of a month, the women documented “What it’s like to be a woman in Gaza today”. The photographs the women took as part of that training will be put on display from 25 November (EVAW Day). The exhibition will be launched with an official ceremony (speeches, theatre, dabke etc.). Participants will be able to enjoy the exhibition as part of the overall ceremony.
