Introduction

The Division for the Advancement of Women will organize a panel discussion to mark the adoption by ECOSOC of the Declaration adopted by the Commission on the Status of Women at its 49th session in 2005. The panel will be organized as a parallel event of the General Segment of ECOSOC and will take place on 21 July 2005 from 1.15 to 2.45 p.m. in conference room 5.

The objective of the panel is to discuss the implications of the Declaration and the actions required to ensure effective follow-up to advance full implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly. In addition, the panel will provide the occasion for ECOSOC to discuss ways and means of linking the outcome of the functional commissions to the review of the Millennium Declaration in the General Assembly in September 2005.
Panelists will be invited to make brief presentations (5-7 minutes) on actions required to ensure full implementation of the Declaration. Participants will be expected to address aspects of particular relevance to their work, for example in relation to the Millennium Declaration, the Millennium Development Goals and enhancing the synergies between the Beijing Platform for Action and CEDAW. The panel will be open to the participation of all Member States, Observers, entities of the United Nations system and civil society, including Non-Governmental Organizations.
