43rd session of the Commission on Population and Development

The 43rd session of the Commission on Population and Development will discuss the theme of "Health, Morbidity, Mortality and Development" from 12-14 April in New York. It focuses on activities related to maternal and newborn care, investing in family planning and midwifery, enhancing reproductive health commodity security, preventing and treating obstetric fistula, abandoning the practice of female genital mutilation/cutting, eliminating gender-based violence, addressing adolescent pregnancy and child marriage, preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, comprehensive condom programming to prevent unintended pregnancy and HIV infection and providing reproductive health services in emergency situations.

E4 Engendering Empowerment: Education and Equality (e-conference)

12 April - 14 May 2010, online, worldwide
Host / Sponsor: United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative

To open up the discussion and allow the broadest possible participation in the E4 initiative, an e-conference will be held prior to the E4 conference in Dakar in May. The e-conference will take place over a period of 5 weeks, between April 12th and May 14th. Each week will focus on one of the themes emerging from the situation analysis produced for the conference:
  • April 12th – 16th Poverty, intersecting inequalities and girls’ rights to education
  • April 19th – 23rd Quality education for gender equality
  • April 26th – 30th Breaking the silence: contesting violence and girls’ education
  • May 3rd – 7th Connecting social policy: climate change, health, AIDS and girls’ education
  • May 10th – 14th Convergence week

9th session of the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration

19 - 23 April, New York, USA

The 9th session of the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 19 April to 23 April. In addition to the main theme, the Committee will also examine the 2010 theme of the annual ministerial review of the high-level segment of ECOSOC: implementing agreed goals and commitments in regard to gender equality and empowerment of women. This session will be opened by Ms. Rachel Mayanja, Assistant Secretary-General, and Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women. It will also include a discussion on information and communications technology and gender equality and a presentation of a case study on the empowerment of women in local government in Lesotho, by Her Excellency Pontso Suzan Matumelo Sekatle, Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship in Lesotho.

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will meet on 22 and 27 April to address gender equality, empowerment of women and development cooperation

In preparation for the substantive session in July this year, the Council will organize a series of meetings. The first one is scheduled for 22 April from 10:00 - 1:00 p.m., which is being organized by FAO and IFAD, in collaboration with WFP, the World Bank, UNIFEM, Heifer International, WOCAN, and the Hunger Project. It will address the topic "Who feeds the World in 2010 and Beyond: Rural women as Agents of Change and Champions of Global Food Security".

UNIFEM Essay and Photo Contest: Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Human Rights — From National Commitments to Real Change
