World Day of Social Justice

At its sixty-second session, in November 2007, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 20 February as World Day of Social Justice. The day was observed for the first time in 2009.

The observance of the day should contribute to the further consolidation of the efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.

Engaging philanthropy to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is organizing a special event on "Engaging philanthropy to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment" (22 February, 3-6 pm, Conference Room 2; ECOSOC Chamber, United Nations Headquarters in New York). The event will attract more than 300 representatives of foundations (corporate and non-corporate), private sector companies and civil society organizations to raise awareness among the philanthropic community on the progress made and the challenges faced in the achievement of Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 3 – to promote gender equality and empower women. Speakers and panelists will include the President of ECOSOC, the UN Secretary-General, Her Grace Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Michael Patsalos-Fox, Vice-Chairman of McKinsey, Geena Davis, Actress and Academy Award winner and top executives from Avon Foundation, Deloitte, Hasbro, Johnson & Johnson, and the Novo Foundation (For more information, please contact Paul Simon, simonp@un.org).
