Nations General Assembly in its resolution 47/237 of 20 September 1993, this
annual observance reflects the importance the international community attaches
to families around the world. The theme for 2009 is "Mothers and Families: Challenges in a Changing World".

The United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDAW/DESA) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) are convening an expert group meeting on good practices in legislation to address harmful practices, to be held at the United Nations at Addis Ababa, from 25 to 28 May 2009.

Expert meeting on national mechanisms for the advancement of women

The expert meeting will initiate a project on national mechanisms. The project will provide updated information on the status of the broad range of mechanisms at national level and the collaboration and synergies between them, and develop a framework for capacity-building of national mechanisms. The meeting will also develop terms of reference for phase one of the project, regional studies on national mechanisms.

As part of the initiative to promote gender equality in education, UNESCO Bangkok - along with the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), East Asia and Pacific (EAP) and South Asia (SA) - is pleased to invite entries for the Photo Contest 2009 on the theme of: Reversing Realities: Seeking Gender Equality in Education
All entries must be received at the UNESCO Bangkok office by 31 July 2009.
Judging will take place in August 2009 at UNESCO Bangkok.
The 13 winning photos will be announced at the end of September 2009.
