Global Symposium on Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, through 3 April 2009
The Global Symposium is hosted by an alliance of non-governmental organizations including Promundo (Brazil), Instituto Papai (Brazil), White Ribbon Campaign Canada, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the MenEngage Alliance, and Save the Children Sweden. The Symposium is organized by a steering committee of 22 organizations from different countries, including UNDP, UNIFEM, and WHO.

Four hundred fifty participants from around the world will share their work in applied research, policy, and program development. Their work challenges rigid gender norms and engages men and boys in reducing violence against women and girls, promoting sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and fatherhood and caregiving.

Statistical Tools for the Analysis of Gender Disparities in the Labour Market

The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Secretariat (UNISDR) would like to invite you to participate in the International Conference on Gender and Disaster Risk Reduction that will take place in Beijing, China , 20-22 April 2009.

The UNISDR is the UN's interagency secretariat for coordinating and advocating for disaster risk reduction, in support of sustainable development goals. The conference expects to achieve a good understanding of the opportunities and challenges for mainstreaming gender into disaster risk reduction.

Objectives:
  1. To review the progress made and challenges faced in mainstreaming gender in disaster risk reduction;
  2. To share knowledge, experiences and good practices in gender and disaster risk reduction;
  3. To discuss the major issues related to linking disaster risk reduction with poverty reduction, climate change adaptation, community development and policy making from gender perspectives;
  4. To recommend actions needed to mainstream gender into disaster risk reduction process by the end Hyogo Framework for Action in 2015.

    Photo Contest 2009 for Promoting Gender Equality in Education

    As part of the initiative to promote gender equality in education, UNESCO Bangkok - along with the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), East Asia and Pacific (EAP) and South Asia (SA) - is pleased to invite entries for the Photo Contest 2009 on the theme of: Reversing Realities: Seeking Gender Equality in Education

    All entries must be received at the UNESCO Bangkok office by 31 July 2009.
    Judging will take place in August 2009 at UNESCO Bangkok.
    The 13 winning photos will be announced at the end of September 2009.
