Blog on the High-Level Event on MDGs

Now until 26 September 2008, worldwide
http://www.mdg-gateway.org/MDG-Blog/

The UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN General Assembly will convene a High-level Event on the Millennium Development Goals at UN Headquarters in New York on 25 September 2008. At the halfway point towards 2015, while significant progress has been made, accelerated efforts are needed by all stakeholders to meet the goals. The High-level Event will be a forum for world leaders to review progress, identify gaps, and commit to concrete plans and resources. By asking world leaders to announce their specific action oriented proposals, the High-level Event will help accelerate implementation and follow-through.

As a part of preparatory work for the upcoming High-Level Event, UNDESA and UNDP, with the support from the MDG Network and the UNDG MDG Policy Network, are launching a Blog on MDGs. Overall, this Blog aims to:
  1. Promote participation and inclusiveness;
  2. Foster partnerships among stakeholders – across all sectors – for the achievement of MDGs; and
  3. Promote awareness on the status and trends of the development goals and inspire concrete action to achieve the MDGs by 2015.
The themes covered by this Blog are drawn from the Secretary-General’s background note "Committing to action: Achieving the MDGs", which consist of: (1) poverty and hunger; (2) health and education; (3) environmental sustainability; (4) gender equality and empowerment of women; and (5) global partnership for development.

It is intended that the Blog will break the barrier of physical distance and hierarchy, accommodating active participation and drawing various insights from all over the world. Your opinions and advice are critical to enrich the upcoming discussions. Upon the conclusion of the Blog, a brief summary of the discussions will be put forward to be considered by the Co-Chairs and Thematic Experts of the round tables at the High-Level Event on MDGs.

Everyone is invited to contribute!

The MDG blog will run from 26 August until the 26 September 2008.

Panel discussion on the integration of a gender perspective in the work of the Human Rights Council with special focus on the work of the UN Special Procedures

Geneva, 12 September 2008
Host / Sponsor: OHCHR

The event will take place at Palais des Nations, Geneva and will be webcast live on Friday 12 September 2008, 10am – 1pm local time: http://www.un.org/webcast

The panel discussion, to be introduced by High Commissioner Navanethem Pillay, will examine the extent to which a gender perspective is being integrated into the work of the Human Rights Council. It will identify progress made since the Council’s last discussion on gender integration in September 2007, as well as current challenges. It should offer a background for focused initiatives (see HRC resolution 6/30) and commence the regular assessment of the extent to which the HRC has fulfilled its responsibility to integrate a gender perspective in its work and institutions.

The presence of three Special Rapporteurs (Mr James Anaya, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, Ms. Najat M’jid Maala, Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, and Ms. Gulnara Shaninian, Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, including its causes and consequences) will allow for a special focus on the integration of a gender perspective in the work of the UN Special Procedures.

More information:

The discussion will build upon the recommendations made during the last panel. All presentations including the summary of recommendations can be found on the Human Rights Council's Extranet:
