Special Representative for Syria
The United Nations and the League of Arab States cooperate to help explore a peaceful, political solution to the conflict in Syria through the Joint Special Representative for Syria.
In August 2012, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Lakhdar Brahimi as Joint Special Representative for Syria. Mr. Brahimi, a former UN envoy in Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and South Africa, replaced Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan.
The Office of the Joint Special Representative is based in Cairo, with a branch in Damascus headed by Mokhtar Lamani.
