The United Nations has worked closely with the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to encourage a peaceful and consensual solution to the political crisis in Madagascar resulting from an unconstitutional change of government in January 2009.
Support to mediation efforts
DPA is currently providing technical support to the SADC Mediation Team’s efforts to broker a solution in Madagascar. A senior political adviser deployed to Madagascar since December 2010 works closely with the United Nations Country Team and provides overall coordination of the United Nations’ support to the SADC Mediation Team.
The United Nations’ support to the process is provided within the context of the UN/SADC Framework for Cooperation on conflict prevention, mediation and elections, adopted in September 2010
