Dr. Georgina Kessel has extensive experience in the public sector, and particularly, in the energy sector. Among other positions, at the beginning of her career she worked at Petróleos Mexicanos and occupied the Directorate General for Economic Analysis Sector of the then Ministry of Energy, Mines and State Industry.
In 1994 she was appointed as the first President of the Energy Regulatory Commission. She also served as a starter in the current Investment Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, in charge of reviewing the investment projects in the public sector in general and, in particular, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), the Commission Federal de Electricidad and Luz y Fuerza del Centro.
In 2002, she served as the General Directorate of the Mexican Mint and in December 2006 was appointed by President Felipe Calderon, Secretary of Energy, a position she held until January 2011.
Dr. Kessel possesses a BA in economics from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico and a Doctorate in Economics from Columbia University in New York City.
