The Group of Friends of Sport for Development and Peace serves as an informal intergovernmental platform among Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. The Group aims to promote dialogue and encourage UN Member States and the UN system to integrate sport actively into their policies and strategies. Members of the Group of Friends share national experiences and practices, exchange information and propose initiatives for its members and the United Nations system, for example joint ventures with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
The Group of Friends also acts as a first informal consultation forum for United Nations General Assembly resolutions relating to Sport for Development and Peace. Examples include the traditional, biannual resolutions on Sport for Development and Peace, the Olympic Truce, and various other special, non-recurring resolutions such as the resolution on the 2010 Football World Cup in
