Seoul (UNOSDP) – Today the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and Korean Air signed a Letter of Intent, aiming to establish a framework for next-step cooperation in the area of Sport for Development and Peace, notably the UNOSDP Youth Leadership Camps. The Letter of Intent was signed by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace Wilfried Lemke and the Korean Air Chairman Yangho Cho during Mr. Lemke’s trip to International Sport Cooperation Conference in Seoul.
The partnership is the continuation of Korean Air Chairman Yang Ho Cho's effort to support sport for development and peace and empowering world youth through sport. Chairman Cho is Ambassador of the 'Peace and Sport' and vice president of Korean Olympic Committee.
Korean Air will provide important support to the use of sport as a tool for development, peace, social change and empowering youth. The UNOSDP Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) will be one of the specific beneficiaries from this cooperation. From 23 August to 3 September 2013, the camp will be kicked off for the first time in Asia. Korean Air, together with the Gwangju Organizing Committee for the 2015 World University Games, will be a main partner for the camp and will be the carrier for the participants and instructors to and from the host city Gwangju, South Korea.
Mr. Lemke, the UN Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, commented after signing the Letter of Intent, “We are delighted with and grateful for this partnership with Korean Air which gives us a possibility to further develop our work in the area of Sport for Development and Peace in Asia as well as around the world. The contribution of Korean Air will be an important support in implementing the projects and carrying on the initiatives that harness sport for positive social change.”
The agreement with Korean Air will provide support of USD 200,000 for UNOSDP for the initiatives of Sport for Development and Peace, divided between USD 100,000 in financial contribution and USD 100,000 in in-kind Korean Airline airfares.
The partnership will seek to develop further cooperative initiatives in the areas on Sport for Development and Peace and UNOSDP Youth Leadership Camp.
