The UN Department of Public Information (DPI) seeks to promote global awareness and enhanced understanding of the work and issues of the United Nations. Its News and Media Division covers UN sport-related initiatives on the UN Web-based news service and other outlets.
1. 'Score the Goals' Educational Comic Book
DPI is one of the six UN organizations involved in the project "Score the Goals - Teaming Up to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals", a 32-page educational comic book featuring 10 football UN Goodwill Ambassadors who become shipwrecked on an island on their way to playing an ‘all-star’ charity football game. Whilst on the island, the team has to tackle the eight MDGs along their journey towards being rescued. The comic book is primarily aimed at 8-14 year old children and provides a fun interactive way to help them understand, familiarize and reflect about the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as inviting them to take action through several activities provided in the adjoining educational guide.
2. United Nations Communications Group's Working Group on Sport for Development and Peace
The Office of the Director of the Outreach Division serves as Secretary for the Working Group, a UN inter-agency platform made up of communications specialists from each UN agency involved in Sport for Development and Peace. The Working Group coordinates the UN system’s communications strategy related to mega-sports events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the Football World Cup.
3. Swim Across the Continents
DPI provided communications support to Dominican long-distance swimming champion Marcos Diaz in his project to connect five continents by swimming, in an effort to raise awareness about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
4. International Year of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE) 2005
DPI circulated information on IYSPE 2005 to all UN agencies through the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG) and to the public through UN Information Centres (UNICs) worldwide. DPI’s News and Media Division assisted in setting up and maintaining a website for IYSPE 2005 and promoted IYSPE 2005 on its multimedia website, visited by many broadcasters and media partners.
