11 July (UNOSDP)- On his recent mission to Iran, the UN Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, Mr. Wilfried Lemke met with the Iranian National Paralympic Committee (NPC) President Mr Mahmoud Khosravivafa, at their HQ in Tehran.

On a joint trip with the German men’s Volleyball team, Mr. Lemke had the opportunity to watch the Iranian team take on the Germans in the FIVB World League. This saw the two teams draw over the weekend event, and with both teams being dropped out of the World League Championship.

The summer Paralympics in London proved to be a very successful period in the history of the Iranian Paralympic squad. Showcasing their 10 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals to the UN Special Adviser, they had reached 11th on the medal table for 2012, their highest position since Sydney 2000, where they reached 16th. It is also important to mention that from the 79 member team, that 7 of the athletes were female.

During his mission Mr. Lemke gained an interesting overview of the development activities in place for Iranian youth with a physical impairment. Looking forward, the NPC President extended an invitation to the UN Special Adviser to visit Iran and celebrate their National Paralympic Day (16th October).

Mr. Lemke paid tribute to the great work taking place and for their great achievements at London 2012, whilst Mr. Khosravivafa expressed his country’s eagerness to cooperate with the UN in pursuing their sport projects in the African and Middle- Eastern regions.

The UN Special adviser emphasized the use of sport as in important tool to include those with a physical impairment in sporting and physical activities. Lemke highlighted the preparedness of the UN to cooperate with the NPC of Iran in all areas.

"As a UN delegate, I would like to support you for the sake of your great efforts,” Lemke said. "Let's focus on using sport to promote development and peace."
