Following the request formulated in UN General Assembly Resolution 58/5 of 3 November 2003, the UN Secretary-General was requested to report at the following session of the General Assembly (its 59th) on the implementation of the resolution and on the preparation of events at the national and international levels to celebrate the International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005.

In all subsequent resolutions of the General Assembly entitled “Sport as a means to promote education, health, development and peace”, the Secretary-General has been requested by Member States to report to them on the progress at the national, regional and international levels with regard to policies, programmes and best practices related to Sport for Development and Peace.

Since the outset, the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) has assisted the Secretary-General in complying with this reporting mechanism and has served as the authoring office. Following General Assembly Resolution 63/135 of 11 December 2008, reporting by the Secretary-General now takes place every other year.
