Manchester  (UNOSDP) – The United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) today signed a partnership agreement seeking to utilise Taekwondo in the anticipation of achieving common objectives to promote sport-for-all and peace.

The agreement was signed by the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, Mr. Wilfried Lemke and the WTF President Dr. Chungwon Choue during the annual World Taekwondo GP in Manchester, United Kingdom.

The WTF is the international governing body for the Olympic Sport of Taekwando. It was founded in 1943 by representatives from 35 countries, and was recognised by the IOC in 1980 as the sole international governing body of Taekwondo.

The organisation boasts 205 member national associations around the World which represents approximately 70 million taekwondo practitioners. As part of the federation’s mission as member of the Olympic family, it will actively promote  the development of Taekwondo around the World, both at the grassroots and elite levels.

The partnership will aim to lead efforts to coherently promote the use of Taekwondo to the UN Millennium Development Goals, peace-building objectives, social inclusion and the rights of persons with disabilities. The cooperation would mainly be carried out through the work of the WTF Peace Corps for Para-Taekwondo as well as through WTF’s involvement in the UNOSDP’s Youth Leadership Programme (YLP).

The federation has previously contributed to the successes of YLP organised in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, in August 2013, sending their facilitators to instruct youth leaders on how to use Taekwondo that is socially inclusive and replicable in their community. Conversely, the Special Adviser and the UNOSDP have agreed to offer WTF the opportunity to send two participants to the next YLP, whilst also assisting the WTF Peace Corps with the intended distribution of Para-Taekwondo.

The UNOSDP is delighted with this partnership. It will seek to develop further cooperative initiatives in the areas of sport for development and peace and UNOSDP Youth Leadership Camps.
