Charity Football Match with UN Secretary-General
Location: New York, United States
On Saturday, 21 April 2012, the second edition of Play31's so-called "DiploMatch" will take place in New York. On the field will be two teams of UN Ambassadors, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will play a half for each side. Also coming to show off their skills will be acclaimed Sierra Leonean author Ishmael Beah, high-ranking UN officials and other NYC personalities.
The match seeks to raise funds and awareness for Play31's peacebuilding work in Sierra Leone. The money raised will be used to finance a community tournament in the country, which will involve almost 500 players — women, men and children — and gather close to 10,000 people. Play31 was created in 2008 and seeks to reconcile people and communities affected from arm conflicts through the power of football.
