UNRWA Gaza Marathon
Location: Gaza Strip (Israel, Egypt, Mediterranean)
The Gaza Marathon will be held on 1 March 2012 to support is the success of 2012 Summer Games through fundraising efforts.
The Summer Games provides a safe place to play, make friends, learn and express themselves freely for over 250,000 children in Gaza. Through art, theatre, sports, beach games and music, the children participate in camps across the Gaza Strip in schools, on beaches and in orphanages and hospitals.
The tiny Gaza Strip, surrounded by Israel, Egypt, and the Mediterranean, is 42km long, exactly the length of an official marathon. Along the route from north to south, nearly 2,000 children, including children with special needs, will run relays, while adults, from professional Gazan athletes training for the Olympics to amateur runners, will run the full marathon.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) relies upon the generosity of its donors to carry out Summer Games. The 2011 Marathon raised over $1 million for Summer Games and hopes to raise even more from the 2012 Marathon.
You can hold a sister event to fundraise for Summer Games in your town. Start training and come to Gaza to participate in the Marathon. Email firstname.lastname@example.org
