High-Level Panel on Sport and the UN Declaration of Human Rights

On Monday 27 February 2012, opening day of the 19th Session of the Human Rights Council, the high-level panel discussion will “highlight, examine and suggest ways in which sport and major sporting events – in particular the Olympic and Paralympic Games – can be used to promote awareness, understanding and the application of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, in accordance with resolution 18/23 adopted by the Human Rights Council in September 2011.
The event will take place from 12:30-14:30 in Room XX of the Palais des Nations, in Geneva.
The panelists will include: Mr. Keith Mills, Deputy Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee; Mr. Carlos Nuzman, President of Rio 2016; and H.E. Mr. Vladimir Lukin, Human Rights Ombudsman and President of the Russian Paralympic Committee.
The session will be opened by Ms. Navi Pillay, High Commissioner for Human Rights, and moderated by Jeremy Browne MP, UK Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Following the high-level discussion, an exhibition will open at 14:30 in the same building of the Palais des Nations, at Bar Serpent. Entitled “London 2012 - Rio 2016 – Transformation Through Sport", the exhibition is organized jointly by the Permanent Missions of Brazil and the United Kingdom and will take place until 23 March 2012.
