United Nations issue commemorative stamps for the London 2012 Paralympic Games

17 August 2012

Geneva (UNOSDP/UNPA) – To commemorate the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued today commemorative stamps featuring six paralympic sports. A launch event is taking place at the Vienna International Centre, Austria, including a table tennis exhibition between members of the Austrian Paralympic Team and the United Nations table tennis club.

The 2012 Paralympic Games will take place between 29 August and 9 September. They will be the largest Paralympic Games ever, featuring 4,200 athletes from 160 countries who will compete in 20 sports.

Like previous editions, they will provide a unique opportunity to highlight and foster issues pertaining to the well-being, empowerment and inclusion of persons living with a disability.

The six paralympic sports featured on the stamps are Goalball, Sitting Volleyball, Athletics, Archery, Wheelchair Basketball, and Paralympic Table Tennis.

On 17 August 2012, hand-cancellations for the stamps will be available at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Palais des Nations in Geneva and the Vienna International Centre (VIC). The hand-cancellations are illustrated below:

The designer, Daniel Stolle, is a German born illustrator, who lives in Finland. He is working mainly in editorial illustration and has worked together with The New York Times, The Washington Post, DIE ZEIT, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and many more publications.

Although only a few days before two Austrian Paralympic table tennis athletes, Ms. Doris Mader and Mr. Hans Ruep, will take off to the London 2012 Paralympic Games, they have kindly agreed to perform a show training and a table tennis match with two members of the VIC Table Tennis Club in the rotunda of the VIC in Vienna.

Note to editors:

The first United Nations stamps were issued in U.S. dollar denominations on United Nations Day, 24 October, in 1951. The stamps were an immediate success and sold out within days. Since then, UNPA has issued over 1,000 stamps.

As the only organization in the world being neither a country nor a territory to issue postage stamps, UNPA is the only postal authority to issue stamps in three different currencies, namely U.S. dollars, Swiss francs and Euro. The stamps extend beyond the boundaries of philately to draw attention to significant world problems and to serve as a reminder of the UN's commitment to its goals.

UN stamps are printed all over the world by security printers, both government printing offices and private security printing firms. Collectors appreciate the high quality of the stamps, which undergo many quality controls and are screened by UNPA for any flaws. This makes the UN one of the highest-quality producers of stamps among postal administrations.
