WHO Declares End of the Pandemic Alert Phase 6

On behalf of the WHO, an Emergency Committee of external scientists has been meeting recently to review the epidemiological situation around the world. They noted that the H1N1 virus is now taking on the behaviour of a regular seasonal flu virus, and that pandemic flu disease activity has largely returned to levels normally seen for seasonal flu, thus fulfilling the criteria for declaration of the post-pandemic phase.

The World Health Organization has officially announced the end of Phase 6 of the Influenza Pandemic Alert today, with a global shift into the Post-Pandemic period (see Figure).

During this phase, the UN Medical Services will continue to remain vigilant, maintain surveillance, evaluate our previous responses, and revise our pandemic preparedness plans accordingly.

For upcoming 'flu seasons, we continue to recommend that all staff should consider being vaccinated, as influenza viruses continue to pose a risk of disease to many individuals regardless of whether the world is in a pandemic situation or not. Vaccination is of particular importance for those at greater risk of complications from flu.
