About the Alliance of Civilizations
"We cannot afford to ignore that young people are in a key position to figure out the main challenges of our age and open up new opportunities for the future.
“Young people have a unique role to play to free our societies from the burden of stereotypes and intolerance."
High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations
In 2005, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan launched an initiative to advance a vision of the world in which different faiths and cultures can live side by side in peace and come together for the good of all peoples, everywhere. This vision was the Alliance of Civilizations.
Four years later, the Alliance is a thriving community of governments and international organizations, leading businesses, academic and research centres, civil society organizations, and faith groups, dedicated to building a more peaceful and tolerant world – through working to implement concrete, on-the-ground projects in the fields of research and education, media and communications, migration and youth issues, which make a difference in communities.
At the political level, the Alliance works to advance the principles of international dialogue and engagement through close cooperation and participation in the work of other components and agencies of the UN system. The mission of the Alliance is also translated into national and regional strategies by participating members of the Alliance’s ‘Group of Friends’, the coordinating body of the organization which includes representatives of over 100 governments and international organizations including the European Commission, Arab League and Commonwealth.
