ShriJairam Ramesh is a Member of Parliament representing Andhra Pradesh in the RajyaSabha since June 2004. From 2009 until July 2011, he was Minister of Environment and Forests. Shri Ramesh was the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry as well as the Minister of State for Power.
He has earlier been Advisor to the Finance Minister during 1996-98 and to the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission during 1992-94. He has previously also served in the Prime Minister's Office, Planning Commission, Ministry of Industry and other central government departments in various capacities.
Shri Ramesh was entrusted with numerous special assignments like implementing India's technology missions during 1987-89, reorganizing the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1986 and analyzing energy policy during 1983-85. He has authored a number of key government reports in areas as diverse as energy, technology, industrial policy and telecommunications.
Shri Ramesh graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai in 1975. Between 1975-77 he studied Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. He then spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studying Technology Policy, Economics, Engineering and Management as part of MIT's inter-disciplinary Technology Policy programme. In 2001, IIT Mumbai presented him their Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Shri Ramesh is a member of the International Council of the New York-based Asia Society and a founding member of the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. He is also the author of two books - 'Kautilya Today' on economics and public policy; and 'Making Sense of Chindia', which analyses Indo-China relations and the emergence of both countries in the global economy today.
