Ban Ki-moon Urges Countries to Ratify New Kyoto Amendment

13 February—UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging countries to swiftly ratify the Doha Amendment, adopted last December, in which governments agreed to a second commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol.

11 February 2013 – Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the Council of foreign relations, turning to what he called “the gathering threat of climate change,” said scientists have long sounded the alarm, and stressed the potential consequences of climate change. Those include “a downward global spiral of extreme weather and disaster,” along with development reversals, increased displacement, aggravated tensions over resources and destabilization of fragile states.

The IPCC regrets this unauthorized posting which interferes with the process of assessment and review. We will continue not to comment on the contents of draft reports, as they are works in progress.

Doha climate conference opens gateway to greater ambition and action on climate change

(Doha, 8 December 2012) At the UN Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar (COP18/CMP8), governments have taken the next essential step in the global response to climate change. Countries have successfully launched a new commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol, agreed a firm timetable to adopt a universal climate agreement by 2015 and agreed a path to raise necessary ambition to respond to climate change. They also endorsed the completion of new institutions and agreed ways and means to deliver scaled-up climate finance and technology to developing countries.
