African woman with stoveAccording to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres, governments meeting at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn (2 to 6 August) have made progress towards deciding the shape a successful result at the November/December UN Climate Change Conference in Mexico, but now need to narrow down the many options for action on climate change presently under negotiation.

In Bonn, many governments said they believed a set of COP decisions which quickly operationalise key elements of the Bali Action Plan would be an achievable outcome of Cancún. Read more...

United Nations Climate Change Conference - August 2010

African woman with stove The third round of UN climate change negotiations this year kicked off with representatives from 178 governments meeting in Bonn, Germany. The Bonn UN Climate Change Conference (2 to 6 August) is designed to prepare the outcomes of the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancún  in November and December.

"Governments have a responsibility this year to take the next essential step in the battle against climate change, " said UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres. "How governments achieve the next essential step is up to them. But it's politically possible. Increased cooperation vital to tackling climate change in Pacific, Ban says      
 

African woman with stove Closer international cooperation is necessary to help Pacific island nations combat the impact of climate change, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, pledging the United Nations’ commitment to mitigating the problem.   

“No other challenge in the Pacific is as urgent and potentially life-threatening as climate change,” warned Mr. Ban in a message to the leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum, being held in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Read more...

Ban warns of costs of inaction on climate change

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned of the risks posed by inaction on climate change, as the high-level group he set up earlier this year to mobilize financing to help developing countries combat global warming reported that they have made progress on the issue.

“The more we delay, the more we will pay – in lost opportunities, resources and lives,” Mr. Ban told reporters. Read more...
