Maricarmen Ortega, 28, is an assistant to the Road Safety Program at the Mexican office of the Pan American Health Organization, where she works to reduce the number of deaths caused by road accidents in Mexico. She graduated in Communication Sciences in 2006.
Maricarmen’s winning video entry, “ If I had the opportunity to speak to the world leaders, what would I say? ” shows a multicultural world in which the inhabitants are not as different as they seem. “We may speak different languages but we all want the same thing: a better, safer world, which is a request that crosses frontiers no matter where are we from,” she said when invited at the UN Headquarters in October 2009.
In her video, Maricarmen chose to focus on many topics people around her felt strongly about: education for children, equal labor opportunities for young people and women, environmental protection, freedom of expression, integration of people and cultures, gender equality and dialogue versus violence. Maricarmen included in her video the voices of many in different languages.
