Asha-Rose Migiro

Asha-Rose Migiro took office as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 February 2007, the third to be appointed since the post was established in 1997. She served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Republic of Tanzania—the first woman to hold that position since her country’s independence in 1961—and as Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children. Dr. Migiro had a career in academia, as a member of the Faculty of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam and as head of the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law and the Department of Civil and Criminal Law.
