With deep regret, UNRWA announces the deaths of the following members of staff and contractors during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza. UNRWA wishes to express its condolences to their families and friends.
Mr. Yassir Al Shaaer died on the 27th of December during the air strike which targeted the Rafah Governorate. He died with his son and nephew. Mr. Al Shaar was responsible for the Beni Suheila food distribution centre in Khan Younis.
Mr. Yahyia Nimr died on the 28th of December while on duty as a school attendant in Khan Younis Prep A Girls School.
Mr. Yousef Othman Abu Hussein, a casual staff member, died on the 3rd of January, during the shelling of Gaza airport and the Al Shouka area.
Mr. Arafa Abed Al-Dayam, an UNRWA school teacher at Izbet Beit Hanoun Prep Boys, died on the 4th January while volunteering to accompany a medical team in the combat zone.
Mr. Samir Rasheed, died on the 5th of January in his house in Ezbet Abed Rabou area, east of Jabalia camp. Mr. Rasheed was a head mechanic for UNRWA.
Mr. Mahrous Shuhaibar and Mr. Naser Shuhaibar, UNRWA contractors, died on the 5th of January, while driving a convoy of trucks to Kerem Shalom to pick up humanitarian supplies for UNRWA.
Mr. Bassem Quta, an UNRWA contractor, died on the 5th of January when an UNRWA truck convoy came under fire.
Mrs. Mather Moh’d Iznead, died in her home on the 8th of January. Mrs. Iznead was an English teacher at Kan Younis Co-Ed school.
