UNRWA provides assistance, protection and advocacy
for some 4.7 million registered Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon,
Syria and the occupied Palestinian territory, pending a solution to
their plight. The Agency’s services encompass education, health care,
social safety-net, camp infrastructure and improvement, community
support, microfinance and emergency response, including in times of
armed conflict.
Since 1971 the European Union has regularly supported
UNRWA, becoming its largest multi-lateral donor. Between 2000 and 2009,
the EU has provided over €1 billion of support to the Agency. This
funding has enabled human development for the most vulnerable Palestine
refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
