Unemployment and the crowded living conditions have not deterred the family from learning new skills. Samah attended various machine knitting courses, including one run by UNRWA, and now produces a variety of sweaters for adults and children which she sells to friends and neighbours. Kamal and Talal are both unemployed but have taught themselves the 'oud (Middle Eastern string instrument) and electric organ and hope to play at weddings to make some money. Kamal sometimes goes fishing to help feed his family. Sabreen is the top student in her high school class and wants to attend English language courses at the British Council to start preparing for the "Tawjihi" exams next year. She hopes to be a journalist when she graduates. Abu Jamal is a canteen worker and after work struggles to find some quiet corner in the shelter where he can rest.
