League of Nations approves British Mandate over Palestine.

1939

Britain proposes an independent Palestine in 10 years.

1947

 

UN Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP), established in May, recommends the division of Palestine into an Arab state, a Jewish state and the city of Jerusalem linked in an economic union. Independence foreseen within two years.

 

General Assembly adopts partition resolution on 29 November. Arab Governments reject the plan.

1948

British Mandate ends on 15 May. Israel proclaims independence one day before.

Between April and August, more than 700,000 people flee their homes in Palestine and become refugees.

 

UN Mediator for Palestine Count Folke Bernadotte assassinated on 17 September, soon after his appointment.

 

General Assembly establishes United Nations Relief for Palestine Refugees (UNRPR).

 
 

General Assembly adopts resolution 194 on 11 December recognizing Palestine refugees’ right of return or compensation and establishing the UN Conciliation Commission for Palestine (UNCCP).

 
1949 UNCCP sets up Economic Survey Mission. UN General Assembly adopts resolution 302 (IV) on 8 December establishing UNRWA. UNRWA takes over assets of UNRPR.
