June 2003. UNRWA Operations Support Officer approaches an Israeli
tank on the only remaining road between Erez and Gaza city in order
to negotiate passage of an UNRWA convoy carrying UNRWA staff living
in Beit Hanoun to their work places in Gaza City.

May 2003. Palestinian workers crowding at the only road open from
Erez to Gaza, while Israeli soldiers establish an effective
roadblock using concrete blocks.

April 2003. Swedish Village, Al Mawasi, Gaza. The outdoor kitchen
of the Najar family inside the Al Mawasi area in the most south
eastern corner of Gaza. The family is preparing their dinner mostly
consisting of bread from flour distributed by UNRWA and baked in the
traditional clay oven. The family lives with running water one hour
per day and without electricity except from 5 to 12 o’clock in the

February 2003. Khan Younis, Gaza. UNRWA Elementary
Co-Educational School in Khan Younis is very close to the “frontline”
between Khan Younis and Israeli military positions guarding the
nearby Israeli settlements. The frequent exchange of gunfire often
causes damages to the school. In spite of the visible UN flag the
outer walls of the building is riddled with bullet holes. (Photo by
