SUMMER GAMES 2008

Fun at the Beach – 30,000 young refugees took part in swimming training, interactive games and arts and crafts.
Express Yourself – 104,000 young refugees learned traditional arts and crafts, Palestinian folklore and kite-making skills at 195 community centres, many of which are located in the most impoverished areas in the Gaza Strip.
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind – Sports activities such as football, volleyball and athletics for 51,000 refugee children and youth at 34 locations across Gaza.
A Little Bit of Everything – 63,000 young refugees played sports and participated in arts and crafts activities in 70 UNRWA schools.
Young Talent – 4,275 particularly gifted refugee students took part in intensive theatre, music and running training.
Museum Excursions – 4,000 young refugees from the poorest areas in Gaza were taken to Gaza’s first archaeological museum to learn of Gaza’s rich heritage.
Circus Performances – An additional 4,000 of the most vulnerable children clowned around at circus performances put on by Clowns without Borders – Spain.
Kite Festival – 6,000 refugee youth flew their hand-made kites sky high in this 2nd annual final festival.
Final Ceremonies – Thousands of refugee children and youth participated in final ceremonies of Summer Games. These included a showcase of dabka and other folklore activities for 4,000 children by children as well as a series of music concerts, theatre performances and races put on by the participants of the Young Talent programme. A final Summer Games ceremony was held for 11,000 children at Gaza City’s Palestine Stadium, with footballer John Barnes in attendance.
