UNRWA and the "Blue Balloon"

This year the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) marks 60 years since its establishment with ‘UNRWA at 60’. To mark this anniversary activities are planned across the world, including in New York, Vienna, Brussels, Beirut and Ramallah. This commemoration is an occasion for sober reflection on six decades of exile during which UNRWA has has worked alongside the Palestine refugees to provide essential services and facilitate great achievements.

The ‘UNRWA at 60’ launch event was held at the Ramallah Women’s Training Centre on 15 May 2009 under the patronage of UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, Ms. Karen Koning AbuZayd and in the presence of senior Palestinian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, senior representatives of the Palestine refugee community, members of local and international non-governmental organizations, as well as former UNRWA Commissioner-General, Mr. Peter Hansen.

The 15 May launch event in Ramallah was held under the theme of the "Blue Balloon". The blue balloon – the symbolic motif of this launch campaign -is UNRWA, a protective moon that has accompanied the Palestine refugees throughout their exile. The balloon represents hope. It can rise over obstacles and therefore unite people that have been separated as the Palestine refugee communities have been since their exile. The balloon is a childhood object, representing the innocence of children who are the chief recipients of UNRWA services.

Tracking Refugee Children’s Wishes

On the 15th of May 60 balloons were released in to the sky with the wishes of Palestine refugee children attached on tags. Each tag is numbered and we are hoping to track the balloons. If a balloon and it’s tag is found we invite the finder to email us with the balloon number and the location where the balloon was found, and we will mark it on the map.
