Women’s
Day 2009

The 8th of March is International Women’s Day (IWD).
IWD is IWD is a global day celebrating the economic, political and
social achievements of women past, present and future. To mark the day a
number of activities are being coordinated across UNRWA’s five fields of
operations. These vents include film screenings, exhibitions, special
classes, and international delegations visits.

Jordan: School Children Say it in Colour In order to make room
for children to participate in efforts to eliminate violence against
women and to encourage them to express their ideas, feelings and
perceptions of this issue, UNRWA school children in Jordan were asked to
produce paintings and drawings on this theme.

Gaza: 50 International Delegates to Arrive In Gaza
On March 7 a 50 member international delegation will attempt to cross
the Egyptian border in to Gaza carrying 2,000 gift baskets to pay
tribute to Gazan women in International Women’s day, March 8.

The Eastern Gaza Centre for Family Development is located in a small
apartment in the east of Gaza city. The centre runs a host of activities
for women and girls and is proving to be very popular.

role in maintaining Palestinian heritage, particularly through the
preservation of traditional embroidery techniques and through mounting

from all walks of life who had made a difference in their communities

West Bank: Pioneer Women In 1996 Dalal Salameh
was one of the first Palestinian women to win the Palestinian
Legislative Council elections. She was one of five women serving on the
council and held her position for ten years, before becoming the head of
the General Union for Palestinian Women in Nablus.

To mark International Women’s Day, Women’s Programme Centres in seven
camps across Lebanon hosted awareness-raising sessions in collaboration

Syria: Palestinian Refugee Women in
the Humanitarian International Law
As part of the Syria’s celebration of the
International Women’s Day, the Syrian Authority for Family Affairs
hosted a session titled “Palestinian Refugee Women in Humanitarian
International Law” at the Syrian Opera House on March 11th.
